Inferior Vena Cava Filter

Inferior Vena Cava Filter

  • Inferior Vena is the large vein in your abdomen that carries deoxygenated blood from the lower part of the body back to the heart.
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a condition where blood clots are formed in the deep vein of the thigh. This can lead to a blockage in the vessels.
  • Inferior Vena Cava Filter placement is done to prevent this.
  • The filter is inserted into the IVC through a small incision in the neck or groin. IVC filter is a small, metal device shaped like the spokes of an umbrella. The filter catches the blood clots and prevents them from reaching the lungs.

When do you need an IVC filter placement?

  • Anticoagulant-associated bleeding
  • Severe platelet shortage
  • Recurrence of blood clots
  • Bleeding in the head
  • Recent bleeding that cannot be treated

Risks of IVS filter placement

  • Swelling of the leg as the filter blocks the IVC
  • Failure of the filter sooner or later
  • Filter moves or travels to the heart or lungs
  • Damage to surrounding veins
  • Infection
  • Allergic reactions
